Portrait of Svante Arrhenius, one of the firstb scientists to identify the greenhouse effect in the late 19th centuryIn 1895 Swedish scientist Svante Arrhenius discovered that humans could increase the greenhouse effect by making carbon dioxide through burning fossil fuels. He kicked off 100 years of climate research that has given us a sophisticated understanding of global warming.
