Exciting event ideas for engaging your community

A good way to involve people in your area is to holding community events showing that taking action on climate change can be fun! You’ll need to think about who you’re trying to attract to an event and target your publicity in areas where they’ll be found. You’ll also need to make sure that you’ve got the information showing how an event links in to climate change, whilst keeping things fun. Films like The Story of Stuff or big display boards can be useful for this.
Why not try…
A BIG Clothes swap – Come together to swap old clothes, and to consider issues of waste. The Story of Stuff film could be shown at the same time.
Carbon Speed Dating – Hold a carbon speed dating event in your local pub. Bring 20 people together from your local area that care about climate change and want to know who else does. Each person chats to another for a couple of minutes before moving on and meeting their next ‘date’. Rather than spreading a campaign message, this is just a nice way to meet like minded people.
Eco-Home Tours- Many people think that there’s nothing else they can do to cut climate change because they simply aren’t aware of how much can be done. Tours of local eco-homes can open people’s minds to the possibilities of sustainable living, and the owners might be able to give some practical advice.
Local food potluck nights or tasting evenings- These events introduce people to foods produced locally, they’re fun, and everyone can join in. You could show films at the same time or have live music.
